DEMOCRACY Dear Minister

Dear Minister

September 29, 2003

Charles Caccia MP

Mr. Caccia;

On Tuesday, September 30, the NDP will introduce a votable motion to have a referendum on proportional representation.

As one of your constituents, I urge you to support this motion.

As I am sure you are aware, our current voting system distorts the will of the people, wastes most of our votes, leaves millions of Canadians unrepresented, discriminates against women and minorities, and exaggerates the regional differences across our country.

Jean Chretien himself said, in an interview in the Globe and Mail in 1984, that if he were ever elected Prime Minister, the first thing he would do would be to bring in proportional representation, so that Liberals could get the representation they deserve in the west.

I urge you to put the long term interest of our nation ahead of the short term interest of your party, and let Canadians choose a fair voting system which will be good for every party, good for all Canadians, and good for Canada.

Sincerely,

Wayne Smith
